It is believed kayaks originated from the Artic area where Eskimos used whale bone and other materials to create a skeleton and then skins of animals to create a vessel that they could use for hunting / fishing.
Of course, todays kayaks are made with a variety of materials one of which is still skin and bones (--traditionalists!!!--).
